NJC GIRLS 14 RED-7 V. CT POLAR BEARS-1,

USA WOMEN'S OLYMPIC TEAM-8 vs. ECAC Hockey All-Stars-2
TEAM USA V. ECAC Results

The New Jersey Colonials 14 U Girls were honored to participate in the Quest Collegiate Tour event hosted by Quinnipiac University and USA Hockey on Sunday, January 3rd, 2010.

The Colonials girls skated an exhibition game with the CT Polar Bears prior to the game between the USA Women's Olympic Team and the ECAC All-Stars. Girls hockey was showcased throughout the event and was high lighted when all of the participants skated onto the ice and stood with Team USA and the ECAC Stars for player introductions and the national anthem.

The day was certain to be a lifetime memory for all of the participants. A special thanks goes out to Quinnipiac University staff and Lori Landino for an outstanding celebration of girls and women's hockey.

The team had a successful holiday tour that included the Polar Bear Tournament and Qwest Olympic event, extending their season record to 30-7-3. Just give a girl a goal and see how she soars! Congratulations, girls!

SQUIRT MAJOR'S EARN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AT BELL CAPITAL CUP!

Dateline-Ottawa, CN, January 2, 2010 –

The NJ Colonials Squirt Major team (99's) beat the Syracuse Nationals, 5-2, to
win the Bell Capital Cup Championship in the Atom Major AAA division on Saturday, January 2, 2010.
The Colonials went 7-0 during the tournament, which ended in a
championship game at Scotia Bank Place, home of the Ottawa Senators.

In round robin play, the Colonials beat Central Ontario Wolves, Bay State
Breakers, Kanata Blazers and Dallas Alliance Bulldogs. The quarterfinals,
against Gloucester Rangers, was a 1-0 game that had the Colonial faithful
on the edge of their seats (or glued to the glass) for the entire game.
In the semi-final game, the Colonials faced top seeded Burnaby Winter
Club from Vancouver. Colonial siblings seemed to spend their holiday money on noisemakers for this game and used them to full effect.

The boys responded with a dazzling and near flawless game, winning 3-1. Igor
Larionov** watched the entire game and came over to tell Coach Jerry Brophy that
the Colonials were the best squirt team he’s ever seen.

The finals matchup with Syracuse turned out to be a battle of wills, with the
Colonials’ 12 skaters going against the Syracuse 10. The game was tied
2-2 going into the third period, when the Colonials started putting the
biscuit in the basket, the chickens in the pot, and the car in
the garage.

The award ceremony proved that the Colonials 99's have, in
fact, the hardest names in hockey to pronounce! The team would like to
thank Coaches Brophy, Gorman, Inamoto and Abruzzese and the Colonial
Nation for its raucous support during the tournament.

Highlights can be
seen at: Bell Capital Cup

**Igor Larionov-a retired Russian professional hockey player, played for the Detroit Red Wings in three runs for the Stanley Cup Championship, '97,'98 and '00. Igor was instrumental in breaking the barrier that prevented Soviet players from joining the NHL. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 11, 2008.

  SAD NEWS

MEMORIAL SERVICE WAS POSTPONED FROM MONDAY, MARCH 2 DUE TO SNOW. SERVICE WILL BE HELD: Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 9:30 AM, St. Christopher's Church, 1050 Littleton Road, Parsippany, New Jersey

It is with deep sadness that we note the passing of former Colonials Girl's Team player, Maddy Loftus, 24. Maddy was on the downed Continental flight # 3407, that crashed just outside of Buffalo, NY on Thursday, February 12. In addition to playing for the Colonials, Maddy played hockey for Parsippany Hills High School. She was a 2002 graduate of the high school.

She continued her hockey career at Buffalo State University and was heading back for a hockey reunion, when the accident occured. Maddy finished her college hockey career at St. Mary's University, Minnesota.

Former Colonials President, Donna Guariglia, said that her husband Dave had coached Maddy as a younger player and stated that Maddy " Was such a great kid and worked hard at becoming a good player. This is a tremendous tragedy."

Girl's Hockey Director, Shelley Looney said she had met Maddy at the Women's National's Camp this past summer. Maddy was a counselor at the camp. The two had spoken about getting Maddy involved with coaching for the Colonials for the upcoming season.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the Loftus Family during this terrible time.

COLONIALS KENNY AGOSTINO, CHARLES ORZETTI COMMIT TO YALE

New Jersey Colonial, Kenny Agostino, who plays for Coach Bob Ritchie's 16 U National team, has made a verbal committment to attend Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, Fall of 2010. Kenny, a long time Colonial, notched 71 points, 30 goals, 41 assists, this year alone, helping the 16 U's to their current # 1 ranking in the AYHL's 16 National Division.

Kenny, a junior at Delbarton and starting forward, was selected for the Second Team All-State and was The Star Ledger's Morris County Player of the Year for the 2008-09 Season. Last year, Kenny's record with Delbarton was an astounding 72 points, 24 goals and 48 assists, helping the #1 ranked school hockey team to a 27-1-1 record last year. According to a recent article in The Star Ledger, Kenny is well on his way to another stellar season, with 17 goals and 21 assists. He'll be joining fellow Colonial and Delbarton teammate, Charles Orzetti, a junior, who also has committed to Yale. Charles played for Coach Randy Velischek's 18 AAA team this past season.

Colonial's Hockey Director, Noel Rubin, has had the distinct pleasure of having coached Kenny on previous teams and had nothing but praise for his former player. "You couldn't find a better or nicer kid to coach. Kenny is a smart, humble and generous player, a great kid on and off the ice." We wish Kenny and Charles the best, as they look towards their future college and hockey careers. Congratulations to them both!

Trivia: Yale students are called "Eli's or Yalies." The name is derived from one of Yale University's early benefactors, Elihu Yale, an Englishman who made his fortune with the East India Company, while living in India. He was solicited as a benefactor, by Cotton Mather, after a religious rift between factions at Harvard and the Collegiate School (now known as Yale). Mather, who had vied for the Harvard presidency was turned down for the position, due to his Puritan religious orthodoxy. He then prevailed upon Elihu Yale to donate money to help create a new school, which ultimately became Yale University.

  CELEBRITY REF REDUX!

NJC 16 U National coach, Bob Ritchie, has once again been selected by the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation of Switzerland) to serve as a referee for the 2009 World Junior Championships in Ottawa, Canada.   END OF AN ERA

Donna Guariglia, esteemed Colonials past President and Board Member, recently resigned her position on the New Jersey Colonials Board. With great reluctance, the Board accepted her resignation. Donna resigned for personal reasons, feeling that with new members on the Board, it was time for them to move in new directions. Donna's husband, Coach Dave Guariglia, also tendered his resignation.

Donna and Dave have spent countless hours in their advocacy of youth hockey programs. Donna will continue in her role as President of the Mid Atlantic Women’s Hockey Association, coordinating that organization’s roll in the 2008 Women’s Nationals to be held at Ice Line Arena, West Chester, PA in March 2008.

Donna served on the Colonials Board for 12 years, starting when her sons Pete and Dan both played on Colonials Teams. Donna’s strong hand and guidance led the Colonials to become one of the premier youth hockey organizations, not only within the Mid Atlantic District but throughout all of USA Hockey. Donna was also responsible for creating the Women’s Program at the Colonials and sponsors the "Guariglia Award" given to a deserving Senior girl who has participated in the Colonial Women's Program.

Dave, a long time coach, is fondly remembered by player and parent alike, as a guy who always cared about his players, worked hard to help a player increase his skills, but never forgot that hockey was supposed to be fun.

Both Guariglias will be deeply missed!

  LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

Alex Velischek, a member of the New Jersey Colonials Midget 18 AAA team, has made a verbal committment to Providence College, Providence Rhode Island, to become a member of the Class of 2013. Providence is a NCAA D 1 college. Alex is currently a Junior at Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey. He has played the past two seasons with New Jersey's perenially top 10 ranked "Green Wave" hockey team, according the the Star Ledger's poll.

Alex will be following in the skates and footsteps of his dad, Coach Randy Velischek, who attended Providence College from 1979 to 1983. Randy went on to play in the NHL for the North Stars, Devils and Nordiques. Congratulations to Alex! Here's to a very bright college hockey career!

BANQUET -A GOOD TIME HAD BY ALL!

Despite the change of date due to the untimely snow storm on Friday, March 16, the Colonials Banquet was well attended at the Marriott on Sunday, March 18! A good time was had by all. Unfortunately, Charrette Award winner, Zander Pindyck, was unable to attend as he had a prior charity event he had initiated for his school. His mom, Megan Pindyck, read his speech and accepted the award in his honor. Fellow Colonial "lifers" Chris Woodford and Conor McMenamy, joined Mrs. Pindyck onstage to honor their long time friend and team mate, Zander. Zander will be attending Sacred Heart University in the fall.

Congratulations to all the Ray Murray Award winners! We will have a list of all the winners shortly!

  NJC'S HOCKEY HERO!

Here is one of the letters we received about the Squirt B's "Hockey Hero!"

"We wanted to let you know about our Hockey hero.
Her name is Linda McKnight, she is the Team Manager for our
team, Squirt B.

To say she is a Team Manger is an understatement! She bakes for
all of us, makes sure everyone knows where and when every
practice and game are. She emails us timely reminders every week
and is on top of any and all changes to the schedule.
When the team jerseys came in she made it very special for each
player, it was a celebration! She gave each player a goodie bag
when we went to Hershey for our Thanksgiving Tournament with
special personalized chocolate bars. At Christmas each player
got a very special hockey gift from her as well as some goodies.
Mrs. McKnight was our Team Manager last year and at the end of
the season she presented each player with a memory book,
personalized for each player with pictures, quotes, coach
commentary and priceless memories from the season. These take
her weeks to make yet each player gets their own made just for
them. She has a family of her own as well as a full time job so
none of us are sure how she manages to get it all done. The
rumor is that she never sleeps!!
Hockey is a lot of fun but Mrs. McKnight makes it a pleasure!
She plans dinners and parties for the team bringing us all
together like a big family.

Linda is absolutely THE BEST there is, we cannot imagine hockey without her and that makes her our Hockey Hero!"
Congratulations, Linda!

Thanks to all our "Unsung Heroes" in hockey! Thanks to Noel, Shelley, ALL our Managers and Coaches, Kathy Branchina!, the Board Members, the Staff at Mennen and especially to our Colonial Families that make the extra sacrifices everyday, to play the sport of hockey!

NJ COLONIAL'S PLAYER DRAFTED BY NHL

Recent Delbarton graduate and New Jersey Colonial, Alex Velischek, was drafted by the NHL on Saturday, June 27, 2009! He was selected in the fifth round of the draft by none other than the 2009 Stanley Cup Champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Alex is the son of former NHL player, broadcaster, 18 AAA and PW Minor Colonials Coach, Randy Velischek and mom, Kathleen. Alex played for the Colonials 18 AAA team this past season, which finished second in the AYHL in regular season play.

Alex is a June 2009 graduate of Delbarton and was instrumental in helping the Green Wave win its second straight NJSIAA Non-public high school championship title this past winter. He was selected as the 2009 Daily Record Player of the Year. Alex will be attending Providence College this fall, following in the footsteps of his dad. The Colonials congratulate the Velischek family on these extraordinary accomplishments!

In other Colonials News, Mike Ambrosia has received a commitment from Princeton University for 2011-2012. Mike's parents are Dave and Lynn Ambrosia. Mike's brother Dan (also a former Colonial) currently plays hockey for Cornell University, where their dad captained the team.

  KEY POINTS OF LEAGUE SETTLEMENT

An agreement has been reached between the New Jersey Colonials and the AYHL-AMHL membership, regarding various sanctions which were previously imposed. The following are the key points of the agreement:
1. There are no longer any roster restrictions imposed on the PW Minor (1998) team, except the league rule regarding 2 player movement.

2. The Squirt Major (1999) team, for the 2009/10 season, will be allowed to roster up to one (1) player from any other AYHL club, provided that such player did not try out for the Brick Super Novice Invitational team, from which no outside players may be rostered.

Noel Rubin will be able to run tryouts, practices, and clinics for all New Jersey Colonial teams without restriction and his role as our Hockey Director is unaffected. Noel can request reinstatement with the AYHL effective November 7, 2009. If reinstated, he can then coach AYHL games, tournaments, and playoffs. We are confident that his request for reinstatement will be favorably considered, provided there are no infractions of AYHL Rules or By-Laws. His probationary period would, however, remain for two more years.

16 U NATIONALS EXCELLENT LABOR DAY ADVENTURE!

Coach Bob Ritchie's Colonials 16 U Midget National team, played 7 games in 3 days at the Labor Day Face Off in Marlboro, MA, Labor Day weekend!

The NJC National team started their journey with a game against the Baystate Breakers on Friday, August 29. The Nats coasted to a solid victory over the Breakers, going ahead by 5 goals in the s econd, forcing the clock to running time. A six goal differential ended the game after two periods.

On Saturday morning, the Nats took on the Greater Boston Bruins, tallying another win, 3-1. But later that evening, the winning streak came to a screeching halt as NJC encountered giant slayers, Mid Fairfield Black. In what would be the first of two games together at this tournament, previous National Champions Mid-Fairfield were eager to set the record straight, having lost to the Colonials the previous weekend in OT, in Cromwell, CT. The Colonials were not about to make it easy for Mid Fairfield and pulled ahead 1-0 at the end of the first. Mid Fairfield tied up the game, 1-1 after the 2nd. With one minute left in the 3rd period, Mid Fairfield dealt the deciding blow, flicking in a goal to take the win, 2-1, vanquishing the sting of their Cromwell loss.

Sunday dawned a new day and attitude re-adjustment. Our boys laced up their skates and pride, and went on to notch two more solid wins, with a mercy decision against the District 10 Bulldogs, 7-0, at 1 PM and then eliminated the Mahoning Valley Phantoms, 6-1, in a late night game.

The boys didn't get much rest, though, as they were up and at 'em early Monday morning, to cross sticks in the Semis against the Buffalo Regals. The Nats were down 2-0 to Buffalo, but clawed back. The Regals forechecked hard and took away the crisp passing that is quickly becoming the hallmark of the National team, but the Colonials owned the third period, as one fan described it. The Nats took down the Regals in a 4-3 squeaker to advance to the championship round.

The Championship Game promised to be a good one against the Colonials now two-tournament nemesis, Mid Fairfield Black. The game portended to be of titanic proportions and did not fail to disappoint!

With pride and egos at stake for this 7 TH game in the series, the teams see-sawed in their scoring, with the Colonials falling behind twice during the match up. Late in the third, Colonial Mike Ambrosia hit the winning tally with a sweet pass from Ken Agostino to get the go ahead and ultimately game winning goal. Final score was 4-3.

Buzz was huge around the rinks once word got out of the Colonials victory over Mid-Fairfield, both in Cromwell and the Labor Day Face Off. A ref commented to one Colonial player on how good he thought the Colonial team was! He expressed his hope to be able to officiate at a future playoff game between the Colonials and TBD opponent!

Several prep school coaches in attendance took note of the games between these two 16 U powerhouses. Congratulations to the Midget National Team and Coach Ritchie for their back to back weekend tournament wins! Way to start the season!

NJC GIRLS ATTEND SELECT DEVELOPMENT CAMPS!

Shelley Looney, NJC's Girl's Hockey Director, recently attended the USA Hockey Girl's Select Development Camps in Rochester, NY from July 19-25. She served as the On-Ice Director for the 14 U Camp. The Colonials were represented by three present and past players: Tara Cuddihy (current 14U Red team) Nikki Rivera (current 14U Red team) and Laura Mead (former NJC player, who has moved onto a New England prep school).

The week of July 26-Aug 1, USA Hockey held the 15 U and the 16 U Select Camps, in Rochester, NY (where the 2009 Girl's National's will be held). Three Colonials players were selected to participate at the camps. At the 15 U Camp were: Lauren Vella, Colleen Broderick (current NJC 16U Red team) and at the 16U camp: Gabie Figueroa (current NJC 16U Red team).
Congratulations are in order to all our Colonials Girl's past and present, for this distinguished honor and to Shelley, in her capacity as the "On Ice Director".
